Executive Functioning Program for Children and Teens

Executive functioning skills are brain-based abilities that help us learn, work, and manage emotions day to day. There are three main processes that are involved and these include working memory, impulse/emotional control, and flexibility in thinking (shifting plans and problem solving). From these three foundational areas, additional executive functioning skills develop which include task initiation, sustained attention, organization, planning, time management, and self-monitoring.

The EF program uses behavioural principles derived from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to help clients learn these essential skills to achieve greater success in their daily lives at home, school, and the community. For children and youth, parent coaching sessions are included to ensure strategies are supported at home and school.

From these basics, other helpful skills grow—like starting tasks, staying focused, planning ahead, keeping organized, managing time, and checking our own work.

Our Executive Functioning (EF) program teaches these skills using proven strategies from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). The goal is to help people feel more confident and successful at home, at school, and in the community. For kids and teens, we also include parent coaching so families can use the same tools and support their child’s progress.

Dalton Associates (DA) and Launch Behavioural Health acknowledge that we are situated on Turtle Island, that has been inhabited by Indigenous Peoples from the beginning. As a settler-owned organization, we are always working on de-colonizing our practices and offering mental health services that reflect a wholistic approach to health and wellness. Our clients come from a variety of backgrounds, and include First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. We want to do more than make a difference at an individual level: we aspire to support a societal shift in the way that mental health is addressed and cared for, and we believe that a cross-cultural approach, bringing Indigenous worldviews to the forefront, is necessary to help break the system and rebuild it in a way that promotes healthy wellbeing for future generations. We are actively engaged in changing the landscape of mental health care in Ontario, by augmenting (and compensating) the voices and experiences of Indigenous knowledge keepers, and by incorporating Indigenous values and teachings in our program models.
