PEERS® for Young Adults Social Skills Group (Ages 17-25)

PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) Curriculum (Laugeson, 2014) is an evidence-based program that teaches friendship skills, developing romantic relationships, and managing conflict and rejection to young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or related social difficulties.

Each small group (8-10 young adults) is led by a Certified PEERS instructor and assistant, using the PEERS® curriculum.

Fee $2000

Young adults will learn skills like:

  • Trading information
  • Conversational skills
  • Electronic communication
  • Choosing appropriate friends
  • Appropriate use of humor
  • Peer entry and exit strategies
  • Get-togethers
  • Dating etiquette
  • Handling indirect and direct bullying
  • Handling arguments and disagreements
  • Handling rumours and gossip

What’s Included:

  • One 90-minute young adult session each week (online, 15 sessions)
  • One 60-minute social coach session each week (online, 15 sessions)
  • Manualized curriculum
  • Group-based learning and peer interaction
  • Supervision by a Registered Behaviour Analyst 

Social coach Commitment

  • Social coaches can include parents, caregivers, adult siblings, friends, partners, and peer mentors
  • Regular attendance at the online weekly social coach sessions
  • Support the young adult with weekly homework, including weekly phone calls and coaching in socialization opportunities
  • Assisting the young adult with finding a source of friends
  • Ongoing communication  about your young adult’s progress and any challenges

Eligibility:

For young adults ages 17-25 who:

  • Can focus and take part in group lessons and activities
  • Can talk about their interests
  • Express interest in learning about making and keeping friends, developing romantic relationships, and/or learning how to manage conflict and rejection

A brief intake meeting will be required before the program starts.

Good to Know:

Services provided by a clinical team of Registered Behaviour Analysts (RBAs) and Instructor Therapists. Funding through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) may be used.
